How to Avoid Tumble Dryer Repairs

Tumble dryers are one of the most indispensable appliances in many homes and it can be really frustrating when they start having problems. However, a lot of tumble dryer repairs can be avoided by carrying out simple maintenance and troubleshooting techniques. Always remember to switch off your machine at the wall and to unplug it before you carry out any maintenance.

If your tumble dryer isn’t switching on, check to make sure the plug socket is switched on and there are no fuses or circuit breakers that have blown or been tripped. If all of these are fine then there may be a problem with the mains electrics so call an electrician immediately.

Another common tumble dryer issue is if the drum and motor are not turning, this is usually caused by a worn out belt or broken bearings. These can be replaced with ease by removing the console and loosening screws around the panel edges. Once the panel is removed, the drum can be accessed by loosening the lint filter catches and releasing the two spring catches on the front of the top panel using a putty knife. Once these are released, the panel can be pushed upwards like a car hood to release and remove the panel itself.

You should also keep your lint filter clean to avoid blocking the airflow into the tumble dryer. The venting system can become clogged with lint as well which will cause your tumble dryer to take longer to dry clothes or even not dry them at all. This is easily fixed by cleaning the lint screen in the dryer’s vent exhaust collar or at the end of an extended vent pipe that sticks out through a basement window or into a wall outside your home.

A noisy tumble dryer can be a real headache and it’s important to determine what the cause is before calling in a repairman. It may be a simple matter of making sure that all the bolts and locks are tightened correctly and nothing is lodged in the machine such as coins, mobile phones or keys. Checking that the lint screen isn’t blocked or overflowing can also help to eliminate some of the noise issues.

Tumble dryers are notorious for being a major cause of house fires and as such should only be used when they are in good working order. Regular maintenance and troubleshooting can be carried out by most people without the need to pay for expensive tumble dryer repairs.

If the problem with your tumble dryer seems to be a mystery then search the internet with your model number and the issue you are experiencing. You will often find that other tumble dryer owners have experienced the same issue and there will be forums with advice as to what could be causing your problem. It is also worth checking online reviews for any repairmen that you intend to use. This will give you a clear idea of the quality of work that can be expected and it is always best to use a reputable company.
